Mulhouse boasts two rivers which are tributaries of the Rhine and an extensive historic heritage; it was a free town in the 12th century, imperial in the 15th century, then a republic allied to the Swiss federation because of its situation near the border and finally became a part of France in 1798. It offers a rich and strong cultural diversity with a variety of differing influences and architecture.
